Why is this Period Cramp more Painful than a Heart Attack! Know the Possibilities

Women have to face periods every month when most of them feel worst. This is why many of women ponder over that it’d be better to get a life without periods. We know the reasons almost behind such thoughts. This happens because of menstrual cramps which are painful sensation and affect many women before and during their periods. Medically, this pain is known as dysmenorrhea or period pains. It ranges from mild to extreme. Menstrual cramps initiates afterĀ the ovulationĀ when an egg is released from the ovaries and travels down the fallopian tube.

Irritation, agony, some pain, discomforts and cramping during menstrual periods are normal .which generally occurs in the lower abdomen and lower back. It usually originates 1 to 2 days before menstruation and lasts from 2 to 4 days. But, the excessive pain that can be responsible you to miss work or institutions are not healthy signs. One should be aware of her sudden cramping or pelvic pain that could be signs of infection. An untreated infection can cause scar in tissue that damages the pelvic organs and may lead to infertility. So, when you get the symptoms of an infection that can involve severe pelvic pain, sudden pain, fever and especially the foul-smelling vaginal discharge, don’t delay and take prompt medical action.

Painful menstruation is known as dysmenorrhea. There are two types of dysmenorrhea: primary and secondary. Former occurs to women who experience pain before and during menstruation. When women have to face the cramping pain due to a medical problem such as endometriosis, uterineĀ fibroid, orĀ pelvic inflammatory disease, it’s supposed to suffer from the secondary dysmenorrhea. Ā But sometime it becomes difficult to define the distinction between the two conditions which is not so distinctive. Many women suffering from dysmenorrhea may have undiagnosed endometriosis. Based on the research, it has been estimated that while 20% of women have the former, aroundĀ 10% of ovulating womenĀ in the US have endometriosis means later symptom, and it takes on average 10 years to get an accurate diagnosis.

According to John Guillebaud, Professor of reproductive health at University College London, ā€œPatients have described the cramping pain as ‘almost as bad as having a heart attack.’Ā  Unfortunately, a researchĀ indicates a ā€˜culture of silence’ that causes with secrecy among women themselves and how seriously women’s pain is taken generally.

Behind such crawly creepy cramps there remain many reasons which may not be an identifiable cause of your painful menstrual periods. Still, there are some probable causes which gear up pain are listed below:

1.Having a family history of painful periods.

2.Being under age 20.

3.Reaching puberty before age 11.

4.Having irregular periods.

5.Smoking.

6.Having heavy bleeding with periods.

7.Never having had a baby.

Actually, during this period the level of prostaglandin rises and triggers muscle as well as helps in contractions in the uterus that expel the lining. These contractions cause the pain and inflammation. The body reacts to these inflammations and attempts to cover it with scar tissue. If anyone left it untreated, it can call for the infertility. If endometriosis is causing infertility problems, then patients have to go through a surgery to move the extra tissue. One must keep in mind that symptoms vary hugely from patient to patient. Patient may have to undergo the ultrasound or, CT scan, or MRI. Even based on the imaging tests, a doctor may order a laparoscopy also. Despite such problems with severe cramps, theĀ existing treatments are limited. For both endometriosis and dysmenorrhea, patients can blunt the symptoms by taking painkillers like ibuprofen, pill as contraception, which tends to reduce the flow of the period.

About Us

SheWings is a social movement to spread awareness about menstrual health among homeless, low income women and teens. Menstruation is a natural process. However, in most parts of the country it remains a taboo and is rarely talked about. We believe that no one should go without menstrual hygiene. We are a social enterprise to break the taboo about menstruation. We don’t need to speak in ā€˜low tones’ about menstruation. Let’s make as much noise as we can!
