Maneka Gandhi’s Letter To Transport Minister Proves India Unsafe For Women

According to the recent report by the Thomson Reuters Foundation, India has been considered as the most dangerous country in the world for women. The country is now undergoing a debate over women’s safety while women are still confronting lots of inconveniences followed by several ways.”India has shown utter disregard and disrespect for women … rape, marital rapes, sexual assault and harassment, female infanticide has gone unabated,ā€ told by Manjunath Gangadhara, an official in the southern state of Karnataka.

The most shameful thing for India is that after so many incidents and reports, there we can’t see any positive changes. Meanwhile, a recent incident in BengaluruĀ where an Ola cab driver allegedly forced a woman passenger to strip which shakes the mind widely.

Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi has written to Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari urging him to ensure that cab companies adhere to all safety guidelines. Ms Gandhi’s letter on Monday came after numerous cases taxi drivers misbehaving with women passengers were reported. According to the Ministry of Women and Child Development, despite repeated reminders and periodical meetings with taxi aggregators, they have failed to adhere to the safety measures enumerated in the guidelines, especially conducting police verification of drivers and disabling central lock in cabs.

Ms Gandhi had spoken for the need to ensure the safety of women travelling via taxi aggregators and also pitched for the idea “exclusive women pooling” where women passengers could opt to choose their fellow riders in shared rides. According to news agency IANS, officials from the ministry also met the representatives of taxi aggregators Ola and Uber. “There are various issues in the operation of cab services. We are examining how women can be ensured safety while travelling via cab providers. We will soon propose ideas,” an official had told IANS earlier.

Such incident in cab becomes almost a regular headline. Every nook and corner of this country is experiencing the brutality over a girl whether she is 1 year old or 100 years old, it does not matter nowadays. Safety matters most but before that, some changeability in-laws requires most which can provide a barrage to brutal deeds.

About Us

SheWings is a social movement to spread awareness about menstrual health among homeless, low income women and teens. Menstruation is a natural process. However, in most parts of the country it remains a taboo and is rarely talked about. We believe that no one should go without menstrual hygiene. We are a social enterprise to break the taboo about menstruation. We don’t need to speak in ā€˜low tones’ about menstruation. Let’s make as much noise as we can!
