UTTARAKHAND’S VILLAGE BUILTS ‘MENSTRUATION CENTRE’ FOR WOMEN
Champawat’s Ghurchum village in Uttarakhand builds a special ‘menstruation center for women to stay there during their periods. The Gram Panchayat of the village used government funds to build the center.
“Even after turning the myth of making women sit outside their house during periods a punishable offense, people are still continuing to do so. In order to protect women from wild animals and getting exposed in cold winter, the Panchayat decided to work regarding this issue on the demand of villagers”, said Kaushal Pandey, development officer of the Gram Panchayat.
He further added “the room has a toilet and bathroom attached to it. As women are not allowed to bath in their house during periods, they can use these bathrooms. Women come here on their own. No one forces them.”
Meanwhile, the village head Mukesh Joshi said that the women come on their own, the center is called ‘Mahila Milan Kendra’. It is used by women for various other activities, if they want to use it during their periods, it is up to them.
Champawat’s district magistrate said that a team will be sent for inspection. The matter came into consideration when DM received a request for building more menstruation center in other places in the village.
