It is not always that tension, pressure and hectic scheduled which are responsible for the bad skin. But, the menstrual cycle also affects the skin problem which is basically known as acne problem, regulated by the fluctuations of hormones. The levels of both estrogen and progesterone hormones fall to their lowest levels during the time of menstrual cycle.
According to the doctor, the average menstrual cycle is 28 days which are different hormonally. “At the beginning of a menstrual cycle, the predominant hormone is estrogen while in the second half, the predominant is progesterone.” Meanwhile, the male hormone testosterone which is made smaller in amounts by women stays at a constant level all month. So, it’s cleared that before and during menstruation, testosterone remains relatively higher than the female hormones. In a word, such hormonal shifts affect a woman’s skin. Most of the cases, the rising of progesterone in the mid-cycle stimulates the production of sebum which is a thick, oily substance and acts as a natural skin lubricant. Besides this, the higher testosterone levels during menstruation further trigger up the sebaceous glands to make more sebum.
When the levels of progesterone increase, skin swells, and pores are squeezed what causes sebum to build up beneath the skin’s surface. Sebum submits different effects on different women. “For some, it produces a healthy glow; for others, it creates a chronic oil slick”. Actually, this oil provides food for the bacterium P. acnes which causes increased dryness and inflammation around the skin. It affects mainly the upper portion of the face. People with hormonal acne have to have faced the pimples and varieties types of spots that affect the face badly. The fact is that most of the teenagers are going through the hormonal changes of puberty which face the increased levels of testosterone. This hormone basically contributes to male development as well as in strengthing of bones for girls. It is responsible for the increase of the sebum production at the base of hairs. No one can change the relationship between acne and hormones.
There remain different types of acne, from mild to severe, is known also as Acne Vulgaris which are influenced by the menstrual cycle. It does not depend on the matter of hygiene, but an internal effect. Still, women should take special care of this special time not to make the things worse, because severe acne can help in forming cysts, causing scars which must fell the effect on one’s self-esteem as well as in the confidence level. Not only the severe acne, but mild acne can attack also in one’s self-confidence because of its distressing appearance.
As girls are much skin concerned, this week becomes a kind of dreaded time of the month to them. Before the start of the period, the levels of the sex hormone estradiol fall and meanwhile, the testosterone rises up at higher levels than. Such fluctuations of hormones can lead to a more acne-prone complexion. According to Dr. Gottfried,“Hormonal fluctuations due to a woman’s menstrual cycle can increase production of sebum closer to a woman’s period, and this excess oil, together with the excess dead skin cells, provides the perfect breeding ground for acne-causing bacteria.” In addition, there persist many myths regarding this period related acne, such as masturbation or sex, chocolate, and nuts, food that contains sugar, milk much in proportions.
Every problem has its own solution that requires proper treatment. Mild acne can be treated with the help of homely products, it may not need any serious help from the doctors. its treatments are possible with the help of antibacterial skin cleansers. actually, there is no fixed and quick treatment for acne. all treatments must take twice or thrice weeks for the proper repair. but, one should keep in mind that over washing is not good for acne and it is better to stop using scrubber along with face wash. all these items remove oil from the skin and start irritating on the skin which may need more oil that also causes worsen the condition. it will be good if one can avoid touching the face because hands introduce dirt and bacteria. The introduction of any extra bacteria in the face will worsen the menstrual acne.
It is medically proved that anything that raises estrogen levels, will lessen the effects of testosterone in women, and birth control pills also work in that same way by slowing down oil production. Some pills are specifically approved for the management of acne and these are really helpful in balancing the link between their acne and periods, but it is prescribed by the doctors according to the health condition of a woman because some can experience increased acne for the first three to four-month because of the changes in hormones. In addition, a proper healthful diet is necessary which can maintain a healthy weight. Such diet will help control acne breakouts around the time of menstruation.”
