Perimenopause is the transition phase to menopause.It is the stage where women gradually starts producing less of the female hormones called estrogen.Usually, perimenopause begins when a woman reaches her 40s but under certain circumstances, it can start from her 30s or much earlier.Perimenopause last upto the stage where the women ‘s body stop releasing eggs from their ovaries.
This period, on an average, last for 4 years.But, in some cases, it can last only for a few days or span upto 10 years.Also, drop in the female hormones called estrogen, normally, speeds up in the last 1 or 2 years before menopause.
If an older woman gets feverish heat in the body, irregular periods, experiencing forgetfulness, breast tenderness and lower sex drive or vaginal dryness and subsequent discomfort during sex along with urine leakages during sneezing and coughing and an urgent need to urinate frequently coupled with mood swings and insomnia, then those are symptoms of perimenopause. Although, only a blood test can confirm it. Another important fact is that women during their perimenopause phase shouldn’t rule out pregnancy as there have been quite many cases of it even though there is a decline in fertility during this stage called perimenopause.
Easing out through perimenopause is possible through regular exercise and maintaining an appropriate body weight, proper sleep and intake of calcium enriched diet. Smoking is discouraged, especially, during perimenopause to ease out the unpleasant symptoms of it.Multi-vitamins for regulating estrogen and anti-depressants medications for mood swings may be taken only after consulting a doctor.
